Hope it was fun while it lasted. Any element of civilization whose design lets it be conquered by barbarians is at best a consumable good, not a durable one.
I guess scientific societies aren't a viable part of civilization then. #sad

Not as currently designed, no. If your equilibria are sticky enough to allow Elsevier, it means the society as a whole must have no way to intelligently redesign or patch itself, and then it's only a matter of time until some pathogen kills it.
