But given the urban nature of the battle, isn't it more likely 9mm Parabellum and 7.62 Tokarev from submachine guns were more common?

True, especially for the Soviets at the beginning and the Wehrmacht at the end. A fun fact about the Mosin-Nagant is that you could cut the barrel in half and with minimal work make 2 PPSh barrels.
