NATO was a huge element in Post WWII world, and helped contain communism, expand liberal democracy. Trade, openness flourish in the absence of war. If we return to pre WWII balance the world will become far more violent. Putin, at least, will be happy.

that said, what if everyone just saves their money (NATO) and tells Russia politely not to expand into our region. If you do we will then ramp up military spending and make you pay at that point. To some extent thats what almost every other country on Earth does with their border

Agreed. But history suggests US defence policy hasn’t really been about *defence* since the end of WW2. That’s the internal policy war that needs to be fought.
