US universities lose crazy amounts of money on sports. I did track and field in the US at a small DI school (South Dakota St.) and in the UK (U. of Oxford); I estimate my Oxford team spends ~$500k less per year by not having scholarships, full-time coaches, or weekly hotel stays.

Plus the results on the track are very comparable between the two schools. Of course, the very best DI track teams produce better results (at 15x the cost), and some of the big schools make money overall on sports, but many actually lose money overall (http://www.espn.com/ncaa/revenue ).
