It's important to understand the past, because the future will be more like the past than futurists can imagine. Our kids will live in a future that's about 80% past, 2% present, and 18% future. (more or less).

To understand the past, it's important to learn about our evolutionary origins and civilizational histories. People who discourage you from doing this are revealing an agenda contrary to your interests.

To understand the present, it's useful to have good mental models of our evolutionary and civilizational past, and of our likely near-term futures. Very few journalists have these mental models, so very few can explain current events with real insight.
