Prescription drug advertisements are strange things. If you have a legitimate disease that can be treated with a drug, your doctor should prescribe it, whether you saw an ad for it or not. What does marketing to the consumer accomplish, medically speaking?

Pharmaceutical reps visit dr offices and medical conventions to leave samples, posters and info about meds. The education is ongoing for drs as well through conferences and online forums. Big pharma doesn't need to market to patients.

Is it not obvious that often an ailment can be solved by multiple drugs and awareness of one over the other would improve market share for the drug company that markets better? Examples: Tylenol/aspirin. Proton inhibitors.
