Many people with physical and neurological disabilities need straws to be able to drink. Plastic straws work best. Banning them would be discriminatory, and might violate the ADA.
Had a conversation about this on FB with a friend who fits this bill, and who had other friends that fit this bill. If it were my restaurant I'd keep the plastic ones to give to these folks and just pay the fine. Everyone else can make it work with whatever.
So if you had a neurological disability you'd have to say that to every cashier and server you interacted with? To request the 'special' straw?
