The risk of nuclear war is very, very important. But preserving Democracy in America is pretty important, too, and is clearly under threat.

Since when have we had a functioning democracy?

It would never happen. The risk is almost 0% (accounting for rogue insiders/ terrible accident) because both sides know it would mean the literal extinction of every human on earth.

Only about 2000 are deployed on each side tho, nukes in a warehouse aren't as dangerous (though there is the risk of them being stolen).

"only about 2000" we are talking about nukes

Nuclear threats are not "in" anymore, bec there are better methods for low-profile low-cost attrition or decentralized damage without reputational risks attached to nuke armament. Think e.g. bio contaminating Wat/San systems, blowing up power grids. Softer+can topple a government
-
Also nuclear armament is regulated and monitored. Other methods are not (necessarily) controlled so well. Nukes are always done by official governments, bio contamination/blowing up grids can be attributed to "lone wolves".
