IMHO, the real hero is Ozymandias, the guy who prevents global thermonuclear war and the extinction of most life on Earth. Rorschach and Nite Owl are just misguided, self-righteous vigilantes. Dr. Manhattan is a sulky nihilistic demigod.

Ozy was just lucky though. His utilitarian calculation only works under the assumption that billions actually would have died, and that the death of millions actually prevented it. He couldn’t actually know that until Dr M confirmed. Ozy has the epistemic arrogance of a Marxist.
