If you hold a position held by ~20% of a population, and you want to spread that belief and make it mainstream, the absolute dumbest thing you can do is to frame disagreement w/that position as so horribly beyond the pale that there's nothing to be debated. I see this a lot!
This makes sense logically, but historically, that tactic has been surprisingly effective.

Marriage equality support was 22% in 1993 and still at only 40% as of 2010. Only a minimal percentage of people - 30, 40% perhaps - were in favor of MLB’s color barrier being broken in the mid-40’s.
