Actually, the series seems to have wildly exaggerated the trauma imposed by these experiments, as Ted K himself has noted. (See reply by @then_there_was below).

If they happened as depicted, they seem likely to have been pretty traumatic, and to increase alienation, paranoia, and aggression. MK-ULTRA was a reckless and vicious program.
