It’s almost as if the male of the human species had some adaptations for combat

I take the point that a 5.56 hardly qualifies as a serious battle rifle or long-range precision rifle.

The British Army are heading towards a mix of marksmen rifles & light machine guns.

What is a “marksman” rifle? You can shoot accurately with 5.56. A friend (a woman) shoots insanely high scores at 600 yards with an AR15. Way better than I could manage. Squads already have rifles and a light MG (SAW), I’m not sure what you’re getting at.

5.56 is a 22 caliber round with a lot of velocity & very effective penetration. I believe it has an effective range of 100 to 300 yards or so in an M4. M4s are essentially lighter, more efficient M16s. They trade mass & raw power for better accuracy/velocity than 7.62mm
