@jerryzmuller’s Tyranny of Metrics? Do you really believe standardized tests are the best way to go about comparing student potential?
I haven't read that, but I've read a lot of other material on IQ and standardized tests. Yes, they're the best ways we have so far; if you know of any objective tests of learning potential with higher reliability and validity, I'd love to hear about them.

A close relative is a teacher and shares my concern that it’s now all about teaching to the test, and material on those tests right now not testing knowledge so much as ability to take tests. More students take these tests, do ok, then take on loads of debt only to fail at uni

I think there is a big diff between test of individual traits (essentially IQ proxy tests) and test to determine school performance.
