Have you read The Three-Body Problem by Liu Cixin? It's an amazing trilogy (especially the 2nd, The Dark Forest), very different from the Culture but also exploring a lot of interesting themes. It handles things differently than most sci-fi/space opera books, in a chilling way.

As a crack-pot paranthesis, I believe more and more that stories and archetypes are fundamental to consciousness (which is why I liked Westworld, even if they could've gone even further with this), perhaps as a medium to archive/synthesize information in the brain.
