The gay BDSM scene in the 70s was the wild west of human sexuality -- very intense, power-oriented, and transgressive. Foucault lived a very edgy life, and thought very edgy thoughts. Many of which were wrong, but IMHO he's still worth reading.

Worth reading like Marx is worth reading, but I feel like both have done terrible, in some ways irreparable damage to our culture and society. Am I wrong in thinking this?

It's possible for a speaker to have a hugely negative influence, but still be worth reading to understand how that influence has worked. And, in Foucault's case, I think there's a version of some of his insights that could be updated to have a more positive impact.
