I don't think we're headed for a civil war. I think our culture and sense of unity and identity will just continue to evaporate until we're nothing but an empty shell and eventually we're invaded and destroyed by a foreign enemy. Anyway have a nice day!
The current 'soft civil war' could turn hard if either side commits a sufficiently outrageous terrorist act, or, more likely, false-flags one. But then, it won't last long, because one side has most of the weapons.
More citizens on one side have weapons, but the other side could rule over the military / police complex, which is exactly their m.o.. seems far fetched but possible.
Also force can come from outside of the country as aid. I'd say outside powers are more aligned with one of the parties than the other.
