While Holmes is bad and possibly mad, it's hard to see why imprisoning her would make the world better. What corporeal punishment do you think our society could stomach imposing publicly on an attractive young woman? Lashings, like in Saudi Arabia? Canings, like in Singapore? Wayerboarding? How would that be a good look, given public psychology?

You know how PR issues work. There's a profound double standard about physical punishment being imposed on men v. women, and esp on young attractive women. It's not a matter of ethical principles, but of citizens reacting to punishment that would appear 'cruel and inhuman'
