While Holmes is bad and possibly mad, it's hard to see why imprisoning her would make the world better. Since when is something being a good look or not something either of us cares about when we're trying to decide what the best policy is?

You know how PR issues work. There's a profound double standard about physical punishment being imposed on men v. women, and esp on young attractive women. It's not a matter of ethical principles, but of citizens reacting to punishment that would appear 'cruel and inhuman'
