Inlaws raise cows and can’t even eat their own livestock because the mothers mourn for days after being separated from their calves who’ve been bought, which are dealt with in the most ‘humane’ way you can imagine.
If you're outraged by human offspring being separated from parents, maybe also consider what happens with dairy cattle and millions of other factory-farmed mammals per year. All have attachment instincts and intense distress at separation. #sentience

Annika, I'm confused by your message here. Are you saying your in laws are wrong because they raise dairy cows or are you concentrating on the inhumane treatment of farm animals as indicated by the speech marks? Or, are you being positive about them?

Yeah...but a cow can't grow up to potentially be an employee or business owner or really add value outside being a cow. A person emotional distress can lead them from functional to societal liability.

They used to say that about some ethnicities, the idea of giving them freedom to self determination sounded insane. Someone need not add value to anybody else to be allowed the right to their own life.

This spring I watched one of our heifers give birth to a calf and then proceed to try to kill it. We had to forcibly separate it and raise it by bottle. They sentient, but they're also animals.

Yea....animals deserve the same rights as humans. Good point. Let’s go further and stop the enslavement of pet dogs and cats- let them all be free, like all living things long to be. Man. People really don’t think things through...

There is an argument to be made we should go that route with pets, and of course that would create other problems. But in any case that does not justify my beef meal in my mind. That is the reason I am trying to change it. And I suck at it. Like all things nutritional change.
