If you’ve spent anytime living or working in the UK then you’d reevaluate this assertion and acknowledge that given the cultural context that these websites are probably the most user friendly thing we have here.

I lived in the UK for nine years. The academic websites are actually the least functional things in the country. IMHO.

It's plausible that nobody's accountable for whatever complaints of that flavor come in (I'm guessing it's non-obvious where feedback like that even ought to go). Also plausible that unless you're a prospective student/donor/etc., they just don't care what you're looking for.

Someone might say that they don't value individual academics

I think they are desperately trying to retain that old academic sense of being obscure and unattainable

You get what you pay for. Undergrads are free labor but are not yet sophisticated enough to do professional-grade coding work.

I worked for a time in an aus university trying to fix that. Main problems 1) relying on academics to self report, 2) doing anything advanced with a stretched IT department, 3) which department is responsible? Each one? RO, TTO, comms.
-
The main problem is 1), academics are saturated with reporting and frankly most of them don't want to be found.

Mostly because 1) consulting firms (e.g. accenture and PwC) were hired to develop the underlying structure which is more like an ecommerce platform than an academic website 1/2
-
2) There remain nebulous categories (e.g. sr academics on short term fellowships) making it difficult to actively determine based on things admins understand like employment contracts, who's actually a faculty member. I advocated we reorg our school website on arrival - FAIL.
