FWIW, I've never seen a discussion of human mating behavior improved by using the terms 'alpha male' or 'beta male'. Scientists rarely use them in describing humans, and men with high formidability, status, and/or mate value don't bother calling themselves 'alphas'.

Ok. But would you agree that alpha / beta can be useful as a first order heuristic ?

Not really. It conflates too many things: formidability, dominance, status, prestige, short-term attractiveness, and long-term attractiveness. All are somewhat positively correlated, but not that highly. Also, none have bimodal distributions.
