Hypothesis: A substantial part of what people call "virtue signaling" is actually self-righteousness - i.e., signaling your virtue to yourself, rather than to other people.

I think in practice, many people sling around the term in a very sloppy manner. Signaling in econ should be sincere and credible. But people use the term to mean "fake".

Yep. Virtue-signaling should refer to something harder-to-fake than virtue-cheap-talking.
