Also, if you’re a socially anxious type, get involved with, volunteer at, or organize an event at the conference. People then need to talk to you. More importantly, you then have to talk to people; and having a reason to talk to people (about the event) relieves some anxiety.

If you are in any industry worth its salt and want a useful network, same rule applies. A small number of genuine interactions at any conference is far more useful than a large number of superficial exchanges with "important" people.

Actually, a good idea is to exchange business cards, and follow up the meeting with a cheery email saying how much you enjoyed meeting them and following up on items from the conversation.
