I wish people would consistently distinguish between the liberal/libertarian Left and the authoritarian/collectivist Left. Just like I wish they would distinguish the liberal/libertarian Right from the authoritarian/collectivist Right. Collapsing these distinctions polarizes.

I used to use SJW to refer to the authoritarian left, but have been told that makes them sad. What term should I use instead now? Neo-Maoists?

The issue is pretty complicated. Public accommodation laws were enacted because some groups were so discriminated against that they ended up spending more money for worse hotels, restaurants, and even hospitals. The refusal to serve blacks created big roadblocks to equality. /1

The issues are complicated, but that's all the more reason to point out inconsistencies between how the Left views freedom of association in the sexual vs. economic domains.

Your use of the term "the left" is too broad here. The ruling at once held up the notion of religious liberty as well as affirming the Federal Civil Rights Act of 1964.

I agree of course. But it’s worth pointing out that the CRA was written this way as a reaction to state laws mandating segregation.

Do you think a small gas station in the middle of Eastern Cali, AZ and large parts of TX (for example) where they are the only gas station for miles should have the right to discriminate? And what about major utilities?
