Oh FFS read any of the 50 developmental psychologists that have been publishing for 4 decades. Of course reason is an advanced attainment, about 50% of the population is earlier than full self-individuated rationality in the West. Trump is what happens when other 50% votes.

I'm guessing even geniuses probably use the shortcuts of social norms to get through a lot of things that don't interest them quickly, and focus their attention mostly of the things that so interest them.
A lot of socially atypical geniuses possibly were so because of various degrees of autism, not because they were rethinking every social norms from first principle (though maybe that's what autism does, it's just not a choice).
Those who believe themselves the most rational often are the ones who need social norms the most
constantly reasoning is very costly. which is why i think of religion as a form of heuristic or decision matrix instead of constantly weighing up and rationalising, you already know if it fits in with your identity of chosen religion(social norms). it has psychological utility
