First off you are simultaneously giving reporters too little credit and professors too much credit. Second, “less important than basic law and order and electricity” doesn’t make something less than extremely important

And I don’t know why you’d pile on the delegitimization campaign the president is waging. Of course journalists and journalism has flaws, but they are exaggerated today and by the president of the United States specifically. Have some fucking perspective

As neither a journalist nor a professor, I think both are often condescending but professors slightly more so. This is coming from someone with huge respect for academia and aspirations to eventually be a prof.

Profs are condescending, but journalists are self-righteous. They’ve conflated The Press with Media. They’ve turners journalism into a “how can I get more clicks so I can keep my job?” festival. Not all, but a vociferous amount have. They earned all this lost trust.

Regardless of whether there's a mass of journalists wrongly claiming to be the sole arbiters of truth in society, is it helpful to deny that journalism does, in fact, reveal to society more than they would know without their presence? Watergate, Panama Papers, Snowden, etc.?
