Unpopular opinion: Psychology would be a better, more realistic science if more researchers had served in the military before getting their PhDs. Even Civil Air Patrol did me some good as a teen.

I’m an economics professor and research center director who served as an active duty infantry officer for 8+ years prior to grad school. Had to do a lot of catch up, but commanding 300+ soldiers and owning $50 mill of equipment helped all of academic life.

Good idea, from what I've seen of various types of therapy and their tendency to coddle the victim (I mean patient) If it were possible, significant participation in an athletic discipline, preferably a team sport, might be able to help develop those qualities as well.
