My thinking is, pre-phd service might promote resilience, stoicism, practicality, resourcefulness, teamwork, confidence, and familiarity with a wider range of people.

I think it better for those in the social and behavioral sciences to experience life a bit before pursuing advanced degrees. Academia is an artificial environment that thrives, partly, on the naiveté of youth.

psychology, like all of the “social sciences,” are soft sciences. This explains the inability to duplicate many of their findings. It also explains why the weather forecast is so often incorrect.. perhaps we should have invented an alternative word for the soft “sciences” .

Academia in general would be served with more warrior-scholars instead of ivory towers. Maybe they should do a Pilgrimage or Walkabout to get firsthand experience instead of theoretical.
