Doctors lose licenses for malpractice. Lawyers can be disbarred. Profs can lose tenure for faking data. What happens to journalists who lie enough to drive clicks? They get promotions and book deals. There's no ethical self-governance in their guild.
But these things need to be determined by other medical/law/specialization experts, not the public. No one criticizing Elon is criticizing journalistic accountability, but this is less well-defined than other examples and needs to be approached with extreme caution... 1/2

That’s because there are no laws whatsoever banning journalists from lying and even making things up entirely. There are, in fact, laws defending their right to do so. It’s called “freedom of the press” and is what they used when Warren Buffett tried to get them to be honest.
Freedom of the Press is a good thing, don’t get me wrong, but apparently they kind of forgot to be specific enough with it and now the News use it as an excuse for all kinds of things that SHOULD be illegal, but aren’t because no one ever explicitly said they were.
I don't hold journos in high esteem but I'm not sure they should be state-sanctioned (as doctors and lawyers are). That would create its own set of problems. Shame used to cover a lot of this. (Plagiarism was a death sentence, but now it is but a PR headache.)
