If you told me that my only weapon against an armoured cavalry charge relied on how quickly I could turn a windlass, I wouldn't just be cross; I'd be furious.
A crossbow has a windlass. Is there a second joke that relies on the use of the word furious?

"Furious" can mean urgent haste, as when used in "furious pace". I guess that's technically a separate meaning, so equivocating between them makes for a pun. Good joke.
