I went to an Indian restaurant last night. The waiter was incredibly rude. He gave me a papadum - you know, one of those thin crispy things. I asked if I could have some softer bread as an appetizer, and he replied - and I quote - "That's a nonstarter."

You didn't get the joke: "that's a naan starter". I think "starter" is more common in the UK; in the US people usually say "appetizer".

Ohh. "Starter" is also a yeast culture used to innoculate bread doughs for leavening. Naan, being a flat bread, is also a non-starter in that sense.
