I like how we have gasoline pumping to most buildings in the city and electrical lines propped up on poles and this is (rightly, afaik) considered almost perfectly safe

Gasoline? No, natural gas. Gasoline is long alkane chains, like 4 to 12 carbons. Butane up to dodecane. Natural gas is mostly methane, and some ethane and propane, I think. 1 to 3 carbons. And the longer chains than those are like paraffin waxes. Gasses then liquids then solids.
