One of my favorite recent observations is that crisp, generative thinking seems positively correlated with the belief that there are a great many things worth smart people’s time, including in the trades/“blue collar” industries. Seems to hold regardless of class!

On the one hand, “let the campus be diverse” is infinitely more palatable than “let the campus be white.” On the other, there may be an unacknowledged visceral discomfort with, say, a 60% Asian campus population. Whites need not be the majority, but only if noone else is, either

I wonder how many different cottage industries are held up by this (SAT prep, music lessons, HS students doing community service, etc. I remember having ZERO interest in it but playing an instrument from 6-17 solely for the college resume.
