Interesting article about the decrease in young men working in favor of leisure activities that hits upon @antoniogm's tweet yesterday about how the bet of SV is that we can quell a labor revolt when jobs are automated away w/these types of distractions:http://kortina.nyc/essays/kinky-labor-supply-and-the-attention-tax/ …

UBI will be a popular solution and perhaps a needed one. I don't like the solution of "attention taxes." Interesting to note that people don't report being any less happier (!) in part bc the desire for conspicuous consumption/aspirational signaling is decreased for these men

Why? Here's one of many. Signaling value has gone down. Unless you can distinguish yourself as a top 20% (and thats increasingly more difficult in an accelerating competitive environment), it's far easier to opt out for a "safe" digital realm.pic.twitter.com/Ipl0Eq4Yew

I don't like the solution of an "attention" tax but it's certainly an interesting and difficult problem. While the authors worry about decreased economic growth, it's probable to me that automation would more than cover for it.

The sad and likely more important question is how to keep the population "amused into irrelevance" so they don't revolt as
@antoniogm phrased it. Improving video games/VR/sexbots + drugs will likely be a big part of the solution.1 reply 0 retweets 3 likesShow this thread -

Isn't this mostly a plague of younger males? Why aren't young women being "amused into irrelevance"? Do these men end up starting families/lives when they hit late 20s or do they create a permanent underclass?

I think so yes. We're still in wait-and-see mode w/regards to permanent underclass in this current crop. Eventually, yes I think so. As for women, I think that's a trickier and more complex question. Have thoughts but too long for Twitter

Interesting. Isn't this the same as young men playing cards while smoking & drinking in gambling alleys or street gangs more recently?

Hmm I would guess these males are from a diff economic class (after all the ability to not have a job or live at home is somewhat of a “privilege” not everyone has)
