Isn't this mostly a plague of younger males? Why aren't young women being "amused into irrelevance"? Do these men end up starting families/lives when they hit late 20s or do they create a permanent underclass?

I think so yes. We're still in wait-and-see mode w/regards to permanent underclass in this current crop. Eventually, yes I think so. As for women, I think that's a trickier and more complex question. Have thoughts but too long for Twitter

Hmm I would guess these males are from a diff economic class (after all the ability to not have a job or live at home is somewhat of a “privilege” not everyone has)
