First of all: you say only 0.3% will see these auto-thumbnails, but a lot more seem to actually see it.

Second: how does this experiment actually work? Because usually I get notifications from twitter first that a YouTuber has uploaded, so I see their thumbnail there first, and therefore your auto-thumbnail doesn’t really matter?

Like I get what you’re trying to research, it’s just that there’s holes here that you seem to have ignored.

For example, usually when you subscribe to someone you’ll watch their videos because you know you like their content in general, so the thumbnail isn’t that relevant.

However the thumbnails would be crucial for (1) youtubers with a smaller following and (2) to gain more followers.

Also, you should really start to listen to your audience. Most people won’t have a problem participating in such experiments once they are asked. But it’s very important to ask.

As it is now, no one will help you in your research because you’ve forced it upon us. Whereas if you’d asked (with a pop-up or something, anything really) you would have gotten more honest and helpful feedback back.
