I work on technology you may have used. Politically homeless, right of center. Tweeting my way through stage two of accepting that the world has gone mad. Hi. 👋

Recently got ahold of a bottle of Macallan Rare Cask. The sherry cask renders it darker than a typical bourbon, and the flavor it picks up is amazing. It's not a cheap bottle, but if you take recommendations... consider it recommended.

Do you have a suggestion for $100 to $200 range?

I've only had a few different bottles in that range, TBH. However: • Macallan Edition No. 4 is quite good (as was Edition No. 3, which you can still find). • Glenlivet 18 is what I typically order when I'm on my boss's tab. :) • Glenmorangie 18 is also quite good.

As you might be able to tell, I'm not huge on campfire-level peaty scotches. I think they taste good for a sip or two, but I feel they rob a bottle of it's other flavor after that. So, if you like it more peat-forward, you may want to ask someone else. :)

Cool thanks for the suggestions!! I'm pretty new to Scotch so everything you said is above my pay grade. :)

No problem! One recommendation I'll add for under $100: if you're near a Costco, check out the Kirkland Signature 20 year. It's an (unspecified) Speyside *finished* (but not aged) in sherry casks, and performs way better than a $50-something bottle has any business performing.

The label isn't going to impress anyone, but pour it from a decanter and no one will know :), and it easily tastes like bottle that costs $100 more. A good scotch that's *aged* in sherry cask will have some nice hints of dried fruit you won't get here, but still a solid bottle.

          What's your opinion on Lagavulin?

I actually haven't had it, although I want to. The closest I've had (by reputation, anyway) is Laphroaig: they're approximate neighbors on Islay and both heavily peated. I thought Laphroaig was ok, but again, a bit peaty for my taste after the first few sips.
