That's a fun theory and all, Ben. Yay Constitution! It was actually that Europe had largely already banned slavery in the early 19th century, and we increasingly looked backwards and unenlightened compared to the rest of the modern world.

The 13th Amendment explicitly allows for slavery if the courts say so. It's still alive and well in prisons across the country
