How is listening to people who devote their life to empirical thought and repeatable studies the same as listening to people who read a vague book written by an invisible dude in the sky?

They are not mutually exclusive. Non-believers don't own science. Science was in no small way initiated and promoted by judeo-Christians and probably why all the early and best univ. and hospitals were Christian. Later taken over by secularism.

That's why I don't believe Scientists or Science. I also am very skeptical of Religious leaders and Religions. People need to read it and study any religion or science themselves. So they can decide whether they want to believe it.
