And from 1870s through WW2 the Democratic Party adopted the Klan as a voting block. In fact the Democrat Convention in NYC in 1924 had thousands of Klan members show up in robes! It was called the "Klanbake."

The two major parties are only nominally the same as they were 150+ years ago. The fact that the GOP was the big-tent anti-slavery party is pretty much irrelevant today.
