Participation trophies happened when hippies from the 60’s and 70’s finally found themselves in charge of stuff in the 90’s.

In middle school traveling basketball tournaments my teams all got something for winning but there was an award hierarchy at least. Still, I wish it had just been just one trophy for the winners. Would have learned to handle more difficult pressure at an earlier age.

Participation trophies always bugged me. I always thought "by giving someone a trophy just for showing up, you make the victory trophy less valuable."

The worse thing of all is that people carry this attitude into the workplace. In the real world companies want people who are the best. And those that just show up can't figure out why they keep getting passed up for promotions and raises. We see it everyday in the workplace.
