Just watched it - great discussion. If these two would have been my English professors, I would have learned a lot more about Shakespeare in college!

My own belief is that "Hamlet" was meant to suck up to (the possibly crypto-Catholic) Anne of Denmark just as "Macbeth" had been meant to suck up to King James: hence Shakespeare's apparent concessions to the Catholic dogma of Purgatory. (There is other supporting evidence, too.)

Don't miss the point! Hamlet is a ridicule of the insanity, lust, greed, betrayal, gullibility, and evil within a typical "royal" family. Ultimately mocked in the death of the entire family[and a few others including best and only friends].

Unlikely a priori, and confirmed by the fact that Shakespeare never mocked royalty thoroughly as he did the mob, which he did throughout his entire career. When the royalty of even an unworthy king is outraged, as in Richard II, it brings nothing but disaster upon society.
