300 to 500 years ago, I would say exploration. European countries reached just about every part of the globe. More recently, the industrial revolution and innovation.

While it is true that all societies have been murderous Western society is the one with the direct consequences to today's world problems. We are largely responsible for the 3rd world and with that the issue should be addressed as such. Diplomatic solutions are essential.
