Was the Civil War really fought to end slavery or did that get tacked on at the end?

If you look at the declarations of secession for the confederate states, all of them mention slavery as either the primary or only reason for their secession. Confederate VP Alexander Stephens cited white supremacy as the “cornerstone” that their country was built on.
