If instead of the nice, clean way of slaughtering civilians from very high in the air, we had no A-bomb, and so concluded that up close torturing, bayoneting and raping them upon invasion would hasten the end of the war, would that have been morally acceptable? Nanking anyone?

This professor’s presentation is in essence very true. One point not mentioned, but also very compelling, is that if the 2 A-Bombs were not dropped, and the US invaded Japan at great human deaths and casualties, the American public would have been outraged over their non-use.

My position is the second was unnecessary and have always believed that. They had two ready to go and they were going to use them.
