In a capitalist society, taking care of yourself and obtaining what you need is out of your control. You are at the mercy of the asset-owning class. If you are poor and desperate, you must sell yourself to an employer (if you can find one who wants you) in order to get an income.

They were happy because they can live without fear of seeking expensive medical services while they situate their lives. So health are won't be an obstacle to becoming successful. If they get a full time job at 18 that offers health care then they use that instead.
