95% or more of all ocean plastic comes from poor Asian countries w/o proper sanitation. All US straws get recycled or sent to a landfill dump. Only a rare straw that goes down a storm drain could possibly end up in the ocean.

I would argue that plastic straws accounting for 0.03% is a vast overstatement. I would say it’s much lower.

This is incredibly misleading considering "China has imported about 45 percent of the world’s plastic waste since 1992 for recycling... In the U.S. alone, nearly 4,000 shipping containers full of plastic recyclables a day had been shipped to Chinese recycling plants." -Usatoday

A recyclable plastic straw in a recyclable paper sleeve is far better than a non recyclable paper straw in a non recyclable plastic sleeve.

Maybe it's just me but how often are people actually using plastic straws or any straw for that matter besides the reusable one attached to water bottles? I can't even remember the last time I have used a disposable straw.

Yes. Bars, restaurants, fast food joints all use straws. Not so much at home I would guess.
