My 14 yo. Has many trophies... the good think is that he is clear which ones are participation theories and which ones he earned. He treasures them accordingly.

I scarcely remember the games from 46 years ago leading up to the earned trophy. I see no purpose in having an unearned trophy.

No, they should not. It devalues the trophy's purpose. Why bother acknowledge placements (first place, second place, etc.) when everyone will get a trophy anyway?

Well since they’re different trophies I don’t see the big deal. Especially if participation trophies are meant to encourage kids to participate in good things like exercising.
