Many of these poor southeast Asian countries import lots of waste from more wealthy countries like the US, so they're not producing most of it themselves. Before 2018, even China bought our plastic waste to cheaply feed its manufacturering sector.

The US is still second in the world when it comes to producing plastic waste and we're also probably near the top when it comes to dumping it in other countries, so let's try to be a little more honest about who's creating this mess

Thank God Ireland banned plastic straws.

It's ironic. Because paper straws are worse for the environment. They are more resource intensive to make and McDonalds themselves say they can't be recycled.
