When all 11 states seceded the Union, every one of their farewell speeches stated slavery as the reason for their secession. We can't get 11 congress people to agree on what flavor of ice cream they like.

States rights....to keep slavery. Except they didn’t give a damn about states rights because they made slavery mandatory for all states and territories in the Confederacy’s constitution.

Everything is driven by economics. Everything. Wars, too. You can motivate with morality but nothing happens w/o economic reasons. If the gov't had bought out slaves, as in Britain, like with tobacco quotas, surplus crops, etc., the cost and casualties would have been much less.
